Terms of service

The rules for using dextract. We have kept them short and in plain words, because terms nobody reads protect nobody.
The agreement
- You keep every right in the documents you upload. We claim none of them.
- We read your documents for you, then delete them. See privacy.
- Our reading of a document is a machine reading. Check it before you rely on it.
- The trial is free and comes as it is. Do not put regulated data in it.
What the service does
You upload a document. dextract reads it and returns the fields, tables and checkboxes it found, each with the place on the page it was read from and a confidence score. You can see the result in the browser, download it, or fetch it over the API.
Your account
You sign in with a Google account. You are responsible for what happens under your account and for who you add to your organisation. Tell us promptly if you think someone has got in who should not have.
You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live and if you are signing up on behalf of a company you must have the authority to bind it.
The free trial
The trial is a one time allowance of 50 documents and 200 pages, whichever runs out first, with the file limits set out on the limits page. It does not reset and deleting documents does not give the allowance back.
The trial is provided free of charge. We may change what it includes and we may stop offering it, though we will not take away an allowance you are partway through using.
Your documents stay yours
You own your documents and everything we extract from them. Nothing here transfers any ownership to us.
You give us one permission and it is a narrow one: to store, process and display your documents for as long as it takes to produce your results and show them to you. That permission covers nothing else. In particular it does not let us use your documents to train or improve any model and it ends when the document is deleted.
You confirm that you have the right to upload what you upload, including any consent needed from the people the documents are about.
Acceptable use
Do not use dextract to:
- Upload anything you do not have the right to upload.
- Upload protected health information or other regulated data to the free trial. The trial runs on shared infrastructure. Ask us about a deployment in your own environment instead.
- Break the law, or process documents obtained by breaking it.
- Attack, overload or probe the service, or work around its limits, its authentication or its allowances.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or otherwise try to derive how the service reads a document, or use the service to build a competing product.
- Resell access to the service without a written agreement with us.
Accuracy and review
dextract reads documents. It does not certify them. A result can be wrong: a page can be too faint to read, a form can be filled in a way we have not seen, handwriting can be genuinely ambiguous. We give you the location on the page and a confidence for every value and we mark a result for review when we have reason to doubt it, so that you can check the ones that matter rather than all of them. That is the whole point of the design.
Nothing dextract returns is medical, legal, financial or insurance advice.
What belongs to us
dextract owns the service and everything in it: the software, the interface, the documentation, the name and the AI models that read your documents. Those models are ours, built by us and how they work is our confidential property. Using the service gives you the right to use it, not any right in what it is made of.
If you send us feedback we may act on it freely, with no obligation to you and no claim by you over what we build.
Availability
We work to keep the service up and we will take it down for maintenance when we need to. The free trial carries no uptime commitment. Paid and on-premise deployments are covered by their own written agreement, which takes precedence over this page wherever the two differ.
Ending it
You can stop at any time. Delete your documents, or ask us to close your account and we will remove it.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks the acceptable use rules above, or that puts the service or other customers at risk. Except where the breach is serious or ongoing, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right and we will give you a reasonable window to retrieve your results.
Warranties
The free trial is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error free, or that any extraction will be accurate or complete.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, dextract is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, nor for lost profits, lost revenue, lost data or business interruption, arising out of your use of the service.
Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. For the free trial that amount is zero, which is the honest trade for a service that costs you nothing.
Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits. Where that is the case, they apply to you only as far as the law permits.
Changes
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects your rights we will email account holders before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts in San Francisco, California and both of us agree to that venue.
